New Delhi. More than 4,500 Indian students have returned home after violence broke out against reservation in Bangladesh. The Indian High Commission in Dhaka and the Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet and Khulna are assisting Indians in their return home.
Along with this, the Ministry of External Affairs is also coordinating with the concerned authorities to ensure smooth movement of its citizens to the India-Bangladesh international border and airports. The Indian High Commission in Bangladesh is in regular contact with the local authorities to ensure the safety of Indian citizens. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that 500 students from Nepal, 38 from Bhutan and one from Maldives have also reached India from Bangladesh.
The High Commission is coordinating with the civil aviation authorities of Bangladesh and commercial airlines to ensure availability of flight services between India and Bangladesh. The Indian High Commission is in touch with the remaining Indian students and other Indians in various universities in Bangladesh, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
The Ministry said that the Indian High Commission and Assistant High Commissions located in various cities of Bangladesh are in regular contact with the remaining students and Indian citizens in various universities of Bangladesh for their welfare and assistance. The total number of Indian citizens in Bangladesh is around 15 thousand, including 8,500 students. The Ministry of External Affairs has also released a list of emergency contact numbers for any need of Indian citizens. Earlier, the Indian High Commission had issued an advisory for its citizens and students living in Bangladesh, advising them to avoid unnecessary travel and to leave their homes as little as possible due to increasing unrest in the country.
