Dhaka. Internet services in the country have come to a complete standstill amid the agitation of quota reform protesters in Bangladesh.
“Bangladesh is currently experiencing a complete internet shutdown. Live network data shows that the country is now in a state of near-complete national internet shutdown,” NetBlocks wrote in a post on Telegram.
The internet blackout comes in the wake of earlier attempts to limit access to social media and mobile data services, the post said.
Protests against the government's quota system for public posts have escalated this week after violent clashes at Dhaka University.
The Daily Star reported that 19 people were killed and more than 2,500 were injured in the clashes.
It is worth noting that the government had stopped the quota after protests in 2018, but restored it in June last year due to the orders of the High Court after the appeal of the families of senior citizens. The government has appealed against this decision in the Supreme Court, on which the verdict will be given on 07 August.
