India Türkiye: Relations between India and Turkey have never been better for the past decade and it seems that Turkey's close ties with Pakistan are going to be the last nail in the coffin of its relations with India. According to reports, Turkey has imposed these secret sanctions in favor of Pakistan. A Turkish government official gave this information during a closed-door meeting in the Turkish Parliament.
According to a Foreign Affairs Committee debate on 10 July 2024, Mustafa Murat Seker, the vice president of Turkey's main arms procurement agency, the Presidency of Defense Industry (SSB), inadvertently revealed the government's secret policy regarding India. In fact, India has been blacklisted by Turkey in terms of defense exports.
Turkey-India relations have deteriorated significantly over the past decade under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's administration, largely due to policy decisions, particularly Ankara's unwavering support to Pakistan in its conflict with India.
According to NordicMonitor, President Erdogan's secret paramilitary group SADAT, led by his former chief military aide Adnan Tanriverdi, has been found to be involved in anti-India activities. The group recruited Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, a Kashmiri-origin man who had served time in a US federal prison, to mobilise resources against India.
Fai’s US-based organisation, the Kashmiri American Council (KAC), which received funding from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), collaborated with SADAT’s front organisation, the NGO Association of the Islamic World (İslam Dunya Sivil Toplum Kuruluşları Birligi, IDSB).
However, Turkey's sanctions are unlikely to affect India. India has already cancelled a $2 billion naval deal with a Turkish defence company and suspended defence exports to Ankara. With the focus on Make in India in the defence sector, indigenous arms and ammunition manufacturing has touched record highs in recent years.
