Ankara: Turkey, being an Islamic country, always supports Pakistan. Due to this, a big deterioration is now being seen in the relations between Turkey and India. The Turkish government has secretly banned the sale of military equipment to India, one of the world's largest arms importers. Erdogan's government has not taken a direct decision to ban. But no arms sales are being approved. This decision has been taken when a few months ago India canceled the contract with the Turkish firm involved in the shipbuilding project. The Turkish government has not made any major announcement about the ban. But it was revealed in a closed-door session in the Turkish Parliament.
According to the details of the debate on July 10, 2024 in the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mustafa Murat Seker, Vice President of Turkey's top arms procurement agency, Presidency of Defense Industry (SSB), inadvertently revealed this secret policy. However, this move by Turkey should not be a surprise. Because whenever it comes to geopolitics, both seem to be opposite to each other. Amidst its closeness with Pakistan, it is seen that Turkey constantly makes anti-India statements. This is the reason why India is also standing against Turkey. It also constantly raises the dispute related to Turkey's enemy Greece.
In April, India cancelled a contract with a Turkish firm involved in a shipbuilding project. Also in April, India welcomed the Greek army chief. Describing his disclosure as sensitive, Sekar told MPs that no government approves the sale of a single military item when the customer is associated with India. Despite the risk of conflict with India, the secret ban information has been made public.
India is one of the top five arms importers in the world. It is a huge market for arms companies, importing about $100 billion. “However, due to our political situation and our friendship with Pakistan, our foreign ministry does not give us a positive response to any exports to India and as a result we do not give any permits to our companies,” he said. The sale of Turkish defence material abroad requires approval from the Turkish military. Turkey has blacklisted several countries to which it does not sell arms.
