The 53-year-old manager, who was appointed in 2016, stepped down just 48 hours after the team’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The English FA now faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement. FA director John McDermott has reportedly shown interest in Tottenham’s Ange Postecoglouadmiring his work.
Speaking to reporters following Tottenham’s 5-1 pre-season win over Hearts, Postecoglou, downplayed speculation linking him to the Three Lions’ top position. Moreover, the former Celtic manager emphasized that his focus remains on his current role at the London club, implying he is committed to staying. The 58-year-old took charge of the London club at the start of last season and led them to a fifth-place finish in the Premier League.

England will face the Republic of Ireland in the Nations League in September. If the FA fails to appoint a successor, an interim manager will take charge. England under-21 coach Lee Carsley is among the top candidates for the role.
Six contenders poised to succeed Gareth Southgate as new England manager
Following Gareth Southgate stepping down as England manager at the end of his eight-year long spell, the hunt for a new head coach remains the primary responsibility of the English FA. A number of prominent Premier League managers have made it to the list of probables.
Among the top six candidates, Newcastle’s Eddie Howeformer PSG manager Mauricio Pochettinoand ex-Chelsea managers Graham Potter and Thomas Tuchel are leading contenders for the coveted position. Additionally, England U-21 manager Lee Carsley is highly regarded by the FA due to England’s victory at last year’s U-21 European Championship.
Meanwhile, former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also being considered for the position. The FA is, reportedly interested in appointing Man City’s Pep Guardiolawhen his contract ends in 2025.
