Amid violence over reservation in Bangladesh, the Supreme Court has given a big decision. The Supreme Court of Bangladesh has abolished most of the reservation in government jobs. The Supreme Court has cancelled the lower court's decision to maintain the reservation and has ordered 93 percent of the jobs to be based on merit. Now only five percent reservation will be given to the families of those who participated in the 1971 war.

Overturning the High Court's decision, the Supreme Court has said that almost all government jobs should be given on the basis of merit. Let us tell you that there were clashes in Bangladesh for several days over reservation reforms in which at least 133 people have lost their lives and thousands have been injured. In view of the violence, the Hasina government had imposed curfew across the country. During the hearing in the Supreme Court, five lawyers were allowed to argue on behalf of the students. Out of the total 9 lawyers who participated in this hearing, eight talked about overturning the High Court's decision. Only one lawyer advocated reservation. Let us tell you that after the reservation reform in Bangladesh, one-third of the government jobs were reserved for the families of those who participated in the 1971 war. Now the Supreme Court has said that only 5 percent of the seats can be reserved for the families of freedom fighters.
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh was scheduled to hear the legality of the recent reservation reforms next month. However, in view of the deteriorating situation and violence, the court heard the case urgently. A lawyer involved in the case told AFP that the court has said that the protesting students should now return to their classes and study. After this order, the reservation will be reduced from 56 percent to only seven percent. Earlier, 30 percent reservation was to be given to the families of those who participated in the 1971 war, which will now be reduced to only five percent. One percent reservation will remain for tribals and one percent for disabled and transgenders. In this way, reservation in government jobs in Bangladesh will almost end. 93 percent of jobs will be given on the basis of merit.
