Shreyas Iyer, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL victory with Gambhir as his mentor, made a well-deserved return to the national team after facing criticism from the selection committee for skipping domestic cricket last season. He explained his absence due to a troublesome lower back. Iyer wasn’t officially dropped from the ODI team as he had scored a half-century in the last ODI India played, but now that he’s back, he will regain his central contract automatically. However, this isn’t the case for Ishan Kishan, who is reportedly not being considered for selection.
According to sources, Kishan will only be reconsidered after a full season of domestic cricket, as moving straight from IPL to IPL is hurting his chances. Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Sanju Samson are currently the top three wicket-keepers for both white-ball formats.
The BCCI’s media release mentioned that the Board “plans to keep an eye on which players are available and playing in the domestic cricket season for 2024-25.” Assam’s Riyan Parag has gained advantages due to his outstanding performance in last year’s Vijay Hazare National one-day tournament, where he made seven scores of 50 or more. It is known that the national selection committee will fully consider performances in domestic cricket.
Newcomer fast bowler Harshit Rana, who took 19 wickets for KKR in this year’s IPL and was chosen for the first two T20 matches against Zimbabwe, has been added to the ODI team. This is because the selectors believe it’s a good time to expand their group of fast bowlers and see how they perform at a high level.
Abhishek Sharma, who scored a hundred in 46 balls, was not selected because there is no spot for him at number 3, where the team captain will bat. Similarly, Chennai Super Kings’ captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was also not chosen.
