Violence over reservation: Students in Bangladesh are staging violent protests demanding the abolition of reservation in government jobs. Within a few weeks, the movement gained momentum across the country. So far 105 people have died in the movement. The Sheikh Hasina-led government has imposed curfew and deployed the army to control the deteriorating law and order situation in the country.
The protesters who took to the streets with sticks and stones set buses and private vehicles on fire. So far, there have been clashes between more than 2500 protesters and the police and security forces. Mobile internet service has been shut down in the country. India has said that this violent movement is an internal matter of Bangladesh. But 15 thousand Indians are safe here. Of which 8500 are students. India's Foreign Ministry is keeping an eye on these incidents. The Indian government is trying to bring Indian students home safely from Bangladesh.
Angry protesters are demanding the abolition of reservation in jobs, which has worsened the situation in the country. Most bus and train services are closed. Schools and colleges have also been closed. This movement in Bangladesh is against reservation in jobs. Some groups are reserved in government jobs. The protesters allege that this is discriminatory and is depriving meritorious students of government jobs.
There is a provision of 56% reservation in government jobs in Bangladesh. In which 30 percent reservation is for the descendants of freedom fighters who fought in the 1971 war with Pakistan. Apart from this, 10 percent reservation is for deprived administrative districts, 10 percent for women, 5 percent for castes belonging to minority communities and 1 percent for the disabled. But students have opposed the 30 percent reservation given to the descendants of freedom fighters.
