Morigaon (Assam). The Assam government has signed an agreement with the Tata Group under which the company will lease over 170 acres of land for its Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor plant at Jagiroad in Morigaon district. The 60-year lease agreement was finalised at the sub-registrar office by Tata Group board member Ranjan Bandopadhyay and Assam Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) manager (technical) and project in-charge Dheeraj Pegu. Tata Group officials, including District Commissioner (DC) Devashish Sharma, Kaninika Thakur, Ashish Mishra and Avinash Dhabade were present on the occasion.
Speaking to reporters after signing the deal, Sharma said it was an important day for the entire state. The facility, to be built on the former site of Hindustan Paper Corporation Ltd, is expected to create over 30,000 jobs, with the first phase to be operational by mid-2025. “The transfer of land has been completed. The Tata Group team has told us that work will start soon. We express our gratitude to them,” the DC said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone of the plant on March 13. The company said the plant aims to meet the growing global demand in AI, industrial and consumer electronics.
