The Indian cricket team is going to tour Sri Lanka to play a series of 3 T20Is and 3 ODIs. In this, 3 T20 matches will be held on 28th, 29th and 31st of July at International Cricket Stadium in Ballekala. Similarly, 3 ODIs are scheduled to be held on August 2, 4 and 7 at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
In this case, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that they will participate in the 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. BCCI's senior selection committee is expected to hold a meeting on Thursday evening via Zoom video call as BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has flown to Sri Lanka for the International Cricket Council ICC Annual Conference to be held in Colombo tomorrow Friday. .
The selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar, in consultation with the BCCI, has finally decided that Suryakumar Yadav will lead the Indian T20I team for the three-match series, while Rohi will continue to lead the Indian team in ODIs. The Read has learned that the selectors were not sure whether to appoint Hardik Pandya as the captain considering his past fitness, so the decision was made to appoint Suryakumar as the captain for the T20Is. Hardik Pandya was the vice-captain of the T20 World Cup winning Indian team.
Although Suryakumar's performance in the series was not satisfactory and he did not live up to expectations, the selection committee has informed the BCCI that they are ready to appoint him as captain in the future. The BCCI is eyeing Suryakumar to lead the Indian team in the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
While Hardik Pandya appears to be the front-runner as captain, the BCCI chiefs and selectors have explained their plans to Hardik Pandya for the next two years. Also, they told him why they like Suryakumar.
Senior players for ODIs
Meanwhile, the senior players in the team have agreed to the demands of the three-match ODI series as it will be the first series under new coach Gautam Gambhir.
Hrithik Pandya will only play T20Is and will not feature in the ODI squad. Similarly, the senior selectors have decided not to pick veteran fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. And he will be given rest from the T20 series. Rishabh Pant is likely to feature in both the Indian teams.
Ryan Barrack in the middle-order
Rajasthan Royals middle-order batsman Ryan Barrack is set to take over the Indian middle-order spot. And The Read understands that he is likely to be selected for the ODI and T20 squads as well. The selection committee is trying new faces for the future. And Barak, who can bowl, is likely to get a place in both teams. Suriyakumar is unlikely to be included in the ODI team due to the inclusion of Barak. It is also known that opener Yashashvi Jaiswal will only feature in the T20 team.
Shreyas Iyer, who was last included in the ICC World Cup 50-over squad, is set to make a comeback in India's ODI squad. The BCCI expressed its deep displeasure with him earlier this year. Also, his name was removed from the annuity contract. However, with his return to international cricket, he will soon be on the BCCI's annual contract. With Hardik Pandya out of ODIs, Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dubey is likely to feature in both the squads.
