Abhinav Bindra is the first Indian athlete to win an individual gold. He won gold in rifle shooting at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

India's legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra is going to receive the Olympic Order Award. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will honour him with this award at the award ceremony held in Paris on August 10. Bindra is the second Indian to receive this honour. Earlier, this award has been given to former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

IOC President Thomas Bach has given this information to Abhinav Bindra by writing a letter. It was written in the letter- 'The IOC Executive Board has decided that you should be awarded the Olympic Order for your commendable service to the Olympic moment.'

Bach has also invited Abhinav for the award ceremony. India's Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has expressed happiness over Bindra being given this award.

What is the Olympic Order Award
The Olympic Order is the highest award given by the IOC, which is given for special contribution to the Olympic moment. This award was started in 1975, when this award was given in three categories – Gold, Silver and Bronze. Then in 1984, the Silver and Bronze categories were abolished and it was decided that in future this award will be given to the heads of states and personalities making special contributions in the Gold category. The IOC also gives this award to the head of state of the country hosting the Olympics.

So far 116 celebrities have received the Gold Olympic Order. Only one Indian is included among them. Abhinav has been given this honor for supporting the Olympic moment. He is promoting Indian sports through the Abhinav Bindra Foundation.

Before Abhinav Bindra, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had received this award. Indira Gandhi was given this award in the award ceremony held in Mumbai in the year 1983.
