Traditional fruit recipes for Sawan Monday fast
Sabudana Khichdi
One of the most popular dishes during Sawan fasting is sabudana khichdi. Made with soaked sabudana, peanuts and potatoes, this dish is not only delicious with the flavours of cumin and green chillies but also provides the much-needed energy during fasting. Sabudana is soaked overnight to soften it, then roasted with spices and cooked thoroughly. Later, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with curd or chutney.
Water Chestnut Pudding
Halwa is popular across India and during fasting, Singhara halwa becomes a popular option. To make the halwa, water chestnut flour is roasted in ghee till it becomes aromatic and golden brown. Then sugar or jaggery is added along with water or milk to get a smooth consistency. Once it is cooked, garnish it with chopped nuts.
Potato and cumin
The next dish you can try is Aloo Jeera, it is a simple but tasty dish which is usually made in every household during the Sawan fast. Chopped potatoes are tempered with spices and then cooked till soft and finally garnished with chopped coriander leaves. Aloo Jeera can be eaten with Kuttu Puri or Sama Rice.
Buckwheat Puri
Puri made from kuttu ka atta can be made during the Sawan Monday fast. These puris are rolled into small round shapes and deep fried until they puff up and turn golden brown. They are light, crispy and taste delicious with potato curry.
Falahari Kadhi
During the Sawan fast, Falahari Kadhi is made with yogurt, water chestnut flour and spices like cumin, ginger and green chillies. It is often served garnished with fresh coriander leaves. You can eat it with Kuttu Puri or Sama Rice.
