After the retirement of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav has become the new T20 captain.
BCCI announced the T20 and ODI team for the Sri Lanka tour on Thursday. Suryakumar Yadav has been given the command of the T20 team. Rohit Sharma will lead the ODI team. Virat Kohli is also included in the team.
Team India will play a series of 3 T20 matches in Sri Lanka. The first match will be played in Pallekele on 27th July at 7:00 pm. The ODI series will start from 2nd August in Colombo.
The Indian team last visited Sri Lanka in 2021. The team played a series of 3 ODIs and 3 T20 matches. The three-match ODI series was won 2-1. India had to face defeat 2-1 in the T20 series.
Why Surya? Gambhir wants long term option
The reason for not giving Hardik the T20 captaincy is also his fitness. In the last one year, Hardik has missed many matches due to injuries. Team India coach Gautam Gambhir wants a long term option in T20 captaincy.
Surya has been the vice-captain of the KKR team
Before joining Mumbai Indians in 2018, Suryakumar Yadav was the vice-captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) for four years. During this time Gambhir was the captain of the team. In the mega auction in 2018, Mumbai Indians included him in their team by bidding 3.2 crores.
Rohit and Virat in ODI team
Along with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli is also a part of the ODI team. Rohit and Kohli have not played any ODI match for India after the 2023 World Cup final. Along with this, Harshit Rana and Riyan Parag have got a place in the ODI team for the first time. Riyan has played T20 for India. At the same time, Harshit has not made his international debut yet.

Indian coach Gambhir's first assignment
Gautam Gambhir became the head coach of Team India 2 days ago. This will be Gambhir's first assignment as an Indian coach. 42-year-old Gambhir has replaced Rahul Dravid, popularly known as The Wall. Dravid's tenure ended after the T20 World Cup. Gambhir's tenure will last till July 2027.
