The riots have caused the most havoc on the roads. Fearless rioters vandalized police vehicles and set them on fire at many places. Buses have been burnt. The rioters set a bus on fire and overturned a police vehicle. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, the police has appealed to the citizens to stay indoors. Heavy police force has been deployed in the entire Hare Hills. There is no report of any casualty so far.
According to the news of The Guardian newspaper, this riot started after the child care government agency took away the children of some people in Luxor Street of Hare Hills. The protesters do not want the agency to separate the children from their parents and keep them in a child care home. People are protesting against this. Videos of the riot are going viral on social media. These rioters are seen roaming around in Hare Hills wearing masks.
Sky News reports that the reason for the riots was the child care agency taking local children. According to a restaurant owner, people protested against taking local children. The disturbance started from Luxor Road. West Yorkshire Police has said that a double-decker bus was set on fire and a police vehicle was overturned. An attempt was made to disrupt the public transport system. Those responsible for this situation will be brought to justice.
Police say the chaos was caused by a criminal minority. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the scenes of unrest were shocking. Councillor Salma Arif urged people to stay at home.
West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin has thanked emergency service officers for dealing with the riots. Local MP Richard Burgon said, “I am returning to Leeds from Parliament. I am in touch with the police and concerned residents.” A spokesperson for First Bus in Leeds said, “Two of our vehicles were caught in the chaos this evening. Both our drivers are safe and there are no reports of passengers being injured. One of our empty buses was set on fire.”
