Quota Crisis: Ongoing student protests in Bangladesh demanding reform of the quota system for government jobs have intensified, resulting in at least 32 deaths and more than 2,500 injuries on Thursday.
Siege on Bangladesh Television building
Protesters surrounded the state-run Bangladesh Television building in Dhaka's Rampura area. The unruly mob damaged the building's front, set several parked vehicles on fire and trapped some staff inside, including journalists.
The peak of the violence was in Dhaka's Uttara area, where several private universities are located. The Daily Star reported that 18 people were killed and many injured in clashes between protesters and law enforcement as well as ruling party men.
Why are students protesting?
The university students have been rallying for over a week against the reservation system in public sector jobs, including a quota for relatives of 1971 war heroes.
The protesters have vowed to enforce a 'complete shutdown' across the country. They are demanding the immediate scrapping of quotas in government jobs, saying the current system discriminates against meritorious students.
