Women beneficiaries of the state availed more than 32.46 crore trips
Khas Khas, Chandigarh:
In a major initiative towards women empowerment by the Punjab Government, free bus travel facility worth more than Rs. 1,548 crore has been provided to the women of the state so far.
Divulging more in this regard, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar today said that during the 28 months of its tenure, the Mann Government has spent Rs. 1,548.25 crore to ensure free travel for women in Punjab Roadways/Punbus and PRTC buses. He said that 32.46 crore journeys have been facilitated for women under this revolutionary scheme, thereby significantly expanding the access to opportunities to empower women across Punjab.
The Cabinet Minister informed that from March 2022 to March 2023, women were provided the benefit of 14.29 crore travels by spending a total of Rs 664.63 crore, while during the financial year 2023-2024, women have been provided the facility of 14.90 crore travels with an expenditure of Rs 694.64 crore. He said that during the current financial year till July 15, 2024, 3.27 crore travels have been provided to women with Rs 188.98 crore.
The Cabinet Minister said that this landmark scheme is a testimony to the multi-pronged approach of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann led Government towards social welfare and gender equality. Bhullar said that by removing the financial barriers to mobility for women, this initiative is enabling them to have easy access to education, employment, health care and other essential amenities. He said that our Government believes that holistic development of all sections is development in the real sense. This free travel scheme is not just a means of providing mobility to women but also signifies self-respect, freedom and development for every woman of Punjab.
The Transport Minister said that the free bus travel facility for women highlights the Mann Government’s resolve for a progressive and egalitarian Punjab, where every citizen can contribute to the development and prosperity of the state without any gender-based bias.
