India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, spoke on Monday about the recent changes in the team since he took over. Gambhir, who has often been discussed in relation to India’s star batsman, stated that his relationship with Virat Kohli is personal and not for public discussion. Over time, Gambhir and Kohli have had disagreements, whether as captains of different Indian Premier League teams or as player and coach. This has led to questions about how well they will get along in the Indian team’s locker room.
Gambhir and Kohli didn’t always get along, which was clear from their many arguments during the IPL. But now, they will be teaming up for the T20 and ODI matches in Sri Lanka starting July 27.
Gambhir said, “My relationship with Virat Kohli is personal and not for public entertainment. What matters is that we are playing for 1.4 billion Indians. We’ve exchanged messages. It doesn’t matter if we talked before or after my statement. He’s a top player, and I have a lot of respect for him.”
Regarding Kohli, Gambhir also mentioned, “We’ve had many talks, and everyone has the right to fight for their spot on the team.”
As seniors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have left the T20 International team, managing the workload of players like Jasprit Bumrah has become more important, according to Gambhir.
Both Rohit and Kohli decided to retire from the shortest cricket format after India won the T20 World Cup last month. Gambhir believes they will now be available for most of India’s matches in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Test matches, since they are only playing these two formats.
“It’s crucial to manage the workload for players like Jasprit Bumrah. Now that Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are playing only two formats, I think they will be available for most of the games,” Gambhir said.
