Bharat Katha Mala
To those anonymous Vairagi-Mirasi and Bhaand folk singers, wandering saints and many ancestors of our society family, thanks to whom these precious stories have reached us from generation to generation
Jatin is seven years old. He studies in the second class in Carmel Convent School. He goes to school by van every day. He is a favourite of his teachers. His mother has raised him with great care. She has only one dream that Jatin grows up to become an IAS officer.
Jatin was also studying diligently to live up to his mother's expectations. Every year he was making his mother proud by winning first place in competitions like calligraphy, essay writing, speech and debate. Whenever his mother visited Jatin's school on the occasion of prize distribution ceremony, she was also called on the stage. She would feel proud then.
Jatin's father was a Subedar in the army. He was martyred for the country in the Kargil war. Since then, his mother has taken care of Jatin by giving him the love of both parents. She is his only support to live.
For the past few days, Jatin is neither eating properly nor playing. He is not as engrossed in studies as before. His mother is worried seeing his behavior.
To cheer him up, his mother said, “Why are you upset, son? You should be happy. Tomorrow you will get a prize again. This time again you have brought glory to me by securing the first position. Tomorrow when I come to school, I will be called on the stage again. Once again my head will be held high with pride.”

Hearing this, Jatin looked at his mother and said sharply- “No… you should not come to my school. Do you know… the reason for my troubles is none other than you. Do you know! When you go to school, the children at school tease me. My friend's mother is so beautiful. And you… you are so ugly!”
Hearing this, the mother started crying. Her patience gave way. Seeing the mother crying, Jatin became restless. He said- “Mother! Why are you crying? Tell me mother!”
Mother did not say anything. Jatin again said- “Tell me mother! I swear to you!”
On hearing the swearing, I had to tell my mother. She said- “Son!..this happened when your father was posted at the border. It was Diwali day..fulljhadi crackers were going off everywhere.
Suddenly… a firecracker fell in our house… and… our house caught fire, son!
The fire was so fierce that… no one had the courage to come near. You were inside the house… my dear. There was no one to save you… my Jatin! So… I jumped into the fire to save you and my body… got burnt.
That's why “I have become ugly, my son!”
Mother burst into tears once again. Jatin's eyes also became moist. He wiped his mother's tears and said- “Mother. You are the best mother in the world. You are the most beautiful mother. No one has a mother more beautiful than you. I had read that after God, mother is the greatest… but… no… my mother! You are even greater than God. Forgive me mother! From today your son will perform your aarti before God.'
After saying this, Jatin started crying. His mother hugged him and both of them started wiping each other's tears.
