In a surprise move, US President Joe Biden (81) on Sunday announced that he is withdrawing from the race to become the next president in 2024 and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party's new nominee. Biden's decision to nominate Harris (59), who has served as America's first female, Black and first South Asian vice president since 2021, comes after her disastrous performance in the presidential debate against her Republican rival and former US President Donald Trump last month.
Although Biden's endorsement has virtually sealed Harris's status as her party's presidential nominee, she still needs to be selected by the party's delegates during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago next month.
Harris immediately secured the endorsement of former President Bill Clinton, making it a little easier for her to win the delegate battle during the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, which begins on August 19.
Kamala Harris was born in California to Tamil biologist Shyamala Gopalan and Jamaican-American father Donald J. Harris, a professor. Shyamala Gopalan moved to the US from Tamil Nadu, India in the 1960s. Kamala visited Chennai and then Madras several times during her childhood and remained in touch with her mother.
Kamala Harris married Douglas Emhoff on August 22, 2014, in Santa Barbara, California. Douglas is an entertainment lawyer who has been working with the multinational firm, DLA Piper since 2017. He provides legal advice on entertainment, publicity, privacy and copyright issues in the media sector. This is Douglas' second marriage.
