Rohit Sharma has been a flag bearer and integral part of India’s batting lineup for the last 11-12 years. He has scored runs all around the world since opening the innings for India in limited overs cricket. However, he has not just been a great player but also a great captain. He led Team India to the T20 World Cup 2024 title and ended the draught of 11 years without an ICC title.
However, his journey to stardom and greatness has not been straightforward. Before he opened the innings for India, he was struggling for runs in the middle order. He had enough talent in him, but he was not able to justify it through his performances. However, captain MS Dhoni trusted on his talent and made him an opening batter. That changed the fortunes for Sharma.
Sharma in a recent interview stated that he has faced a lot of setbacks in his career but he has had to deal with it as a sportsman’s career has ups and downs.
I've seen ups and downs, setbacks in my career, but that's how a sportsman's career works. But as a sportsperson you need to cherish every moment and come out in a better wayRohit Sharma said in an interview on Dubai Eye 103.8 Radio Station back in May (via Times of India)
Rohit Sharma was sacked as the captain of Mumbai Indians ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024
Sharma led India to the T20 World Cup 2022 semi final. However, he was inconsistent with the bat and faced a lot of criticisms. After the World Cup, a younger team was selected and Hardik Pandya or Surya Kumar Yadav were leading it. He was not part of the T20I setup for 2 years and there were questions raised on his place as a batter for the T20 World Cup 2024.
However, come the ODI World Cup 2023, he batted with vengeance and was ultra aggressive at the start. He played a big part in India qualifying for the final without losing any game. However, he faced a heartbreak in the final as his team lost the game against Australia and his dream of winning a ODI World Cup was shattered.
He was then appointed as the captain of the Team India for the T20 World Cup 2024. However, despite being a captain of the national team, he was sacked as the captain of Mumbai Indians for IPL 2024 without any proper discussions if reports are to be believed. However, the Hitman came back in style as he powered India to a T20 World Cup win undefeated.
