- Court slaps heavy fine on female journalist for mocking Italian Prime Minister
- Ordered to pay 5000 euros for mocking Georgia Maloney
- Journalist Giulia Cortes was fined 1200 euros suspended for the tweet
In Italy, the court has imposed a heavy fine on a woman journalist for mocking the Prime Minister of the country. A Milan court has ordered a journalist to pay 5,000 euros (Rs 4,55,569) in compensation for mocking Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on social media.
This controversy started 3 years ago
Apart from this, a suspended fine of 1200 euros (109336 rupees) has also been imposed on journalist Giulia Cortes for a tweet made in October 2021 regarding Maloney's height. The tweet was defined as 'body shaming'.
“The Italian government has a serious problem with freedom of expression and dissent in journalism,” Cortes wrote on Thursday's X on the court's decision. 3 years ago, Maloney took legal action against the journalist after the two had a dispute on social media.
Mock the height
The Italian party Maloney Brothers was in opposition at the time. Maloney objected when Cortes posted a fake photo of him with fascist leader Benito Mussolini in the background. In another tweet, Cortes wrote, 'Don't scare me Georgia Maloney. You are only 4 feet tall. I can't even see you.'
Cortes can appeal the sentence. Maloney's lawyer said the prime minister would donate the fine to charity. These are difficult times for independent journalists in Italy, Cortes wrote on Thursday. We hope for better days. We will not give up.'
Even earlier journalists had to pay fine
Earlier last year a Rome court imposed a 1,000 euro fine and legal costs on author Roberto Saviano. He was accused of insulting Maloney on TV in 2021 because of his tough stance on illegal immigration.
