The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the teams for the upcoming trip to Sri Lanka, making some surprising choices. One of these was selecting Suryakumar Yadav to captain the T20 team instead of Hardik Pandya, which surprised many. Another unexpected move was not including Ravindra Jadeja in the One Day International (ODI) squad. Jadeja, who had recently retired from T20 cricket, was thought to be a key player for India in Sri Lanka, but he wasn’t listed in the team. Since India will only play six ODIs before the Champions Trophy next year, many believe that Jadeja’s exclusion from the ODI team could have a significant impact.
It has been said that Jadeja was not removed from the team, but just given a break for the Sri Lanka games. The people who choose the players for the BCCI, led by Ajit Agarkar, talked with the main coach, Gautam Gambhir, and told Jadeja that he is still the top choice for spinning and batting in one-day matches. But, a story on ESPNCricinfo says that the selectors and the coach wanted to give Axar Patel a chance in that position to see if he can do as well in 50-over games as he did in T20 matches.
Regarding Jadeja future, he has been guaranteed to be included in upcoming assignments.
The report also provided information about Yuzvendra Chahal’s status in the Indian team. The leg-spinner was not selected for either the T20I or ODI teams by the selectors, even though he was part of the team’s campaign in the T20 World Cup 2024. Chahal is a top-level bowler, but his international career has been quite unusual over the past three years. He didn’t play in any matches during the T20 World Cup, as the team management chose Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja instead.
The report states that the selectors have temporarily set aside Chahal’s case.
