Israeli operation: 70 people were killed and more than 200 injured on Monday in an Israeli operation in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The attack came after Israel warned it would take “forceful action” in the region to stop rocket attacks. Thousands of Palestinians evacuated southern areas following a temporary evacuation order, including the al-Mawasi humanitarian zone. The Israeli military said its aim was to attack Hamas militants, indicating it targeted 'more than 30 Hamasi infrastructure' sites in Khan Yunis.
The attacks included a weapons storage facility, surveillance posts, tunnel shafts and other structures used by Hamas fighters. Most recently, 92 people were killed in an attack on al-Mawasi, which Israel claimed was targeting a Hamas commander. Civil defence agencies in Gaza City reported that at least 12 people were killed, while four others lost their lives in the Jabalia refugee camp.
Israeli military operations in Gaza have killed more than 39,000 people, mostly civilians, according to the Health Ministry in Gaza. The war began with Hamas' October 7 attacks that killed 1,197 people, mostly civilians, in southern Israel. Hamas men also took 251 hostages. Netanyahu is due to meet US President Joe Biden, who is urging him to agree to a ceasefire.
