Colombo, July 22 (IANS) Following the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Annual Meetings in Colombo, the ICC's Board has appointed three of its Directors – Roger Toews, Lawson Naido and Imran Khwaja – to review the organisation of the Men's T20 World Cup 2024. The event was held in the USA and the West Indies from June 1 to 29.
The 2024 Men's T20 World Cup was the first global cricket event to be held in the United States. 16 matches were played in New York, Dallas and Florida. New York's Nassau County International Stadium was heavily criticized for its drop-in pitches and slow outfield.
In addition, teams such as Sri Lanka and Ireland faced logistical problems due to their hotels being far away. Investigations are being conducted into whether the tournament's US leg has gone beyond the original budget, and who is responsible for it.
The ICC said in its statement on Monday that Roger Toews, Lawson Naido and Imran Khwaja will submit their report on the conduct of the tournament to the board by the end of the year.
The ICC also said that USA Cricket and Cricket Chile have been formally issued notices for current breaches of the ICC Membership Criteria and have 12 months to rectify the same.
In addition, the Chief Executives Committee confirmed the allocation of eight regional qualifying slots for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. Two teams from Africa and Europe, one from America and three from the joint regional finals of Asia and EAP will qualify. This World Cup will be jointly played in India and Sri Lanka.
The ICC Board has also approved 16 teams in the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in 2030. The tournament to be played in England in 2026 will feature 12 teams and then increase to 16 teams in 2030. In addition, the Board confirmed that the qualification cut-off date for the 2026 World Cup will be October 31, 2024.
The ICC Annual General Meeting was attended by all 108 ICC members. The theme of the four-day conference was to capitalise on the opportunity of cricket's inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
