England dominated the first day of the second Test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge on Thursday, July 18. Ollie Pope's brilliant century helped the hosts display badball cricket and post a mammoth 416 at stumps on day one in Nottingham.
After winning the toss, West Indies invited England to bat first. England lost the wicket of their opener Jack Crowley in the very first over. Alzari Joseph sent Crowley back to the pavilion on zero. After this, Ben Duckett and Pope gave England a quick start by adding 105 runs for the second wicket in the first 19 overs.
Pope and Duckett got off to a fast start
Duckett hit a half-century in 32 balls and England crossed the 50-run mark in just 4.2 overs, the fastest in the history of Test cricket. Pope was more cautious than Duckett, but kept the scoreboard ticking by scoring regular ones and twos. Shamar Joseph gave West Indies success by taking Duckett's wicket in the 19th over. Before getting out, Duckett scored 71 runs in just 59 balls.
Ben Duckett hit a century
Pope kept England's scoreboard ticking by making crucial partnerships with Joe Root and Harry Brook. During this, Pope scored his sixth Test century. Alzari ended Pope's brilliant innings of 121 runs off 167 balls just before the tree break. This paved the way for the Caribbean bowlers to dominate in the last session.
Alzari Joseph took three wickets
Captain Ben Stokes contributed 69 runs off 104 balls. Tailenders Jamie Smith (36) and Chris Woakes (37) played cameo innings to take England past 400. West Indies bowlers bowled impressively by taking six wickets in the third session. Alzari took three wickets and England's first innings ended at 416 runs in 88.3 overs.
