Pediatric Cancer: Pediatric cancer, though relatively rare, presents unique challenges. Unlike adult cancer, it is caused by lifestyle and environmental factors. Pediatric cancer is usually caused by genetic mutations and cellular changes caused by ionizing radiation exposure during development as well as certain chemotherapy drugs.
Certain genetically determined inheritable conditions such as Down syndrome, Li-Fraumeni syndrome and ataxia telangiectasia are increasingly associated with child leukemia. Early detection is key to curing these diseases, thereby significantly improving outcomes and survival rates.
Dr Ushma Singh, Director of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology at Andromeda Cancer Hospital, Sonipat, said that early detection and intervention in cases of child cancer lead to better outcomes. By identifying and treating these cancers at an early stage, we can significantly improve the prognosis and quality of life for our young patients.

Pediatric cancers include several categories. Leukemias, such as acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), are the most common, with ALL affecting lymphoid cells and AML affecting myeloid cells. Brain and central nervous system tumors, such as medulloblastomas and gliomas, are the second most common. Other types include neuroblastoma, Wilms tumor, lymphoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, retinoblastoma, and bone cancers such as osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma, each of which affects different tissues and organs in children.
Dr. Ushma explained that early detection of pediatric cancer can lead to more effective treatments, less aggressive treatments, and better survival rates. Early-stage cancers are often less aggressive and more responsive to treatment, significantly improving the prognosis. Early detection can also lead to lighter treatments, reduce long-term side effects, and improve the quality of life of children treated for cancer at an early stage. In addition, treating cancer at an early stage is generally less expensive, benefiting both families and healthcare systems.
Recent advances in pediatric cancer treatment offer new hope through targeted therapy, immunotherapy, genomics-based personalized plans, minimally invasive surgery, and stem cell transplantation. These innovations, including drug therapy, CAR T-cell therapy, and advanced surgical techniques, have improved the effectiveness of treatments, reduced side effects, and enhanced recovery for children.
Dr. Ushma further added that the fight against pediatric cancer is one of the most important battles in medicine. Early detection is the cornerstone of effective treatment, giving children the best chance for a cure and a healthy future.
