She was born in 1931 in Lahore in a Hindu Punjabi family. Bina Rai's real name was Krishna Sareen. The name Bina Rai was given to her by the famous producer Kishore Sahu.

Bina was interested in films since childhood. After completing her education, she wanted to enter films after seeing a news advertisement. At that time producer Kishore Sahu needed new girls for his film. Bina gave an audition and she got selected.
In 1951, Bina Rai did her first film 'Kaali Ghata'. After this film, she signed many big films. She got the most popularity from the film 'Anarkali' released in 1953. She played the role of Anarkali in this film. This film proved to be a super hit.
