Dhaka, July 19 (Tezzbuzz). The student movement in Bangladesh has become extremely violent and so far 64 protesters have died. Students in Bangladesh have been protesting for the past several days demanding the abolition of reservation in jobs. The protesting students set fire to a prison building in Narsingdi district on Friday and freed hundreds of prisoners.
On Friday, student protesters freed “hundreds” of prisoners from a jail in central Bangladesh's Narsingdi district and then set the prison building on fire, local police said.
A news agency quoted a police official as saying that prisoners escaped from the jail and protesters set the jail on fire. “I don't know the number of prisoners but it will be in hundreds,” he said. A senior government official confirmed the news of the jailbreak but gave no further details. Dhaka's police force has banned all public gatherings for today in an effort to prevent another day of violence.
Police chief Habibur Rahman said all rallies, processions and public gatherings in Dhaka have been banned. He said the move was necessary to ensure “public safety”. “Our protest will continue,” said a protester. He said they want “the immediate resignation of Sheikh Hasina” and that the government is responsible for the killings. At least 64 people have died in the protests so far, according to some reports citing the number of victims given by hospitals.
