Zagreb, July 23 (Tezzbuzz). Six people were killed and six others injured when an armed attacker opened fire at an elderly care home in central Croatia on Monday, Croatian police said.
Croatia's police chief Nikola Milena said five people died immediately while one died in hospital. He said the suspect fled the scene but was soon captured by police in a cafe in the town of Daruvar. The dead included five residents of the care center and one employee, Milena said. Police said they received information about the attack on Monday morning. A statement issued by the regional police office said the suspect was in police custody.
N1 regional television said the attacker was a former policeman who took part in Croatia's 1991-95 war. Media reports said one of those killed was his mother, who had been living at the care centre for the past 10 years. Croatian President Zoran Milanovic said he was shocked by the incident. Authorities were investigating the reasons for the attack.
