New Delhi, July 19 (IANS) A research has revealed that obesity can affect the brain as well as reduce sperm count.
In their study, researchers at the University of California-Riverside fed mice a high-fat diet to mimic human obesity.
The findings showed that the mice had fewer connections between neurons in their brains and fewer receptors that normally alert the brain that there is enough energy and to stop eating.
“This may explain why we are unable to reduce our calorie intake,” said Jurjaika Kos, professor of biomedical sciences at the School of Medicine and lead author of the study published in the Journal of Neuroscience.
Reproductive function is controlled by the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, which is disrupted by obesity, Koss said. This primarily affects the brain rather than the testes or pituitary.
Obesity causes decreased testosterone and sperm production due to decreased hormone levels from the pituitary gland.
The study found that mice fed a high-fat diet had fewer synaptic connections in neurons that control reproduction, which is similar to the mechanism in the human body.
Obesity affects millions of people worldwide and is associated with health problems such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.
