Chandigarh. Radical Sikh preacher and MP Amritpal Singh, lodged in a jail in Assam's Dibrugarh district under the National Security Act (NSA), has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court and requested to issue a direction to cancel all proceedings against him under the Act, including his detention. Amritpal Singh, MP from Khadoor Sahib seat, argued in the High Court that his detention is 'illegal' and hence it should be canceled.

“This serves no purpose except to punish the petitioner for speaking out against the State and Central governments on key political issues, which is a democratic right of every citizen of this country,” he told the court. “I was arrested on the basis of posts shared on social media by various individuals across the world, which hardly have any impact in the State of Punjab and possibly the security of the State of India cannot be so delicate as to be affected by social media posts,” Singh said in the petition.
