Air India announced on Friday that all passengers on its flight from Delhi to San Francisco are safe after a technical glitch forced the plane to divert to Russia. Flight AI183 made a precautionary landing at Krasnoyarsk International Airport in Krasnoyarsk Krai when the cockpit crew detected a potential issue in the cargo hold area. The flight carried 225 passengers and 19 crew members, all of whom were taken to the terminal building for further processing.
Passenger Assistance
Given that Air India does not have its own staff at Krasnoyarsk International Airport, the airline is arranging for third-party support to assist the passengers. “As Air India does not have its own staff at KJA, we are arranging for third-party support to provide all necessary assistance to passengers,” the airline stated.

Air India is also coordinating with government agencies and regulatory authorities to arrange a ferry flight to transport passengers to San Francisco as soon as possible. “All of us at Air India are concerned about the passengers and staff and are making every effort possible to operate the ferry flight as soon as possible, and to ensure the health, safety, and security of all while they wait. We will share further updates as soon as they are available,” the statement added.
Historical Context of Technical Issues
This incident mirrors a similar event last year when another Air India flight on the same route experienced technical problems and was diverted to Russia's remote town of Magadan. That Boeing 777-200 LR aircraft was carrying 216 passengers and 16 crew members. Passengers were temporarily accommodated in a school for two days until a replacement flight, carrying food and other essentials, arrived from Mumbai to take them to San Francisco.
