A 14-year-old boy died of Nipah virus in Kerala's Malappuram on Sunday. He was undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kozhikode. State Health Minister Veena George gave this information. Veena George said the boy, a resident of Pandikkad, suffered a heart attack at 10.50 am on Sunday and could not be saved. He said, 'The victim was kept on ventilator. After the heart attack, several attempts were made to save him but all failed. He passed away at 11.30 am. Thus, the risk of Nipah virus is increasing now after Corona.
The state health minister said his last rites will be performed as per international protocol. The Health Minister said, 'The District Magistrate will discuss with the boy's parents and family. Only after this will a decision be taken regarding the last rites.' Earlier, the minister had said that Pandikkad was the epicenter of the infection and precautionary measures had been taken. He asked the people in the area and surrounding hospitals and public places to wear masks and avoid meeting patients in hospitals to prevent transmission.
ICU ward with 30 separate rooms and 6 beds ready
The health department has also set up an ICU ward with 30 separate rooms and 6 beds at Manjeri Medical College. All these people who came in contact with the infected boy have been isolated. In Pandikkad, strict surveillance and controls will be imposed within a radius of three kilometers from the epicenter. The state government recently announced that a special action plan is being drawn up to contain the outbreak of Nipah, which has plagued the state 4 times in the past. Nipah outbreaks were reported in Kozhikode district in 2018, 2021 and 2023 and in Ernakulam district in 2019. Nipah virus antibodies were found in bats from Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram and Ernakulam districts.
What is Nipah virus?
Nipah virus is a disease transmitted from animals to humans. It is called zoonotic disease. It can spread to humans from bats and pigs. The virus can cause fever, vomiting, respiratory disease and brain swelling.
What are the symptoms?
Apart from causing the usual viral fever symptoms, this infection also affects the nervous system. Due to which the central nervous system is also affected. which results in encephalitis or inflammation of the brain. Due to which the patient can go into coma within 24 to 48 hours.
