New Delhi, July 22 (Tezzbuzz). The International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday announced that Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra will be awarded the Olympic Order. Bindra will be given this honour at the award ceremony held in Paris on August 10. Bindra is the second Indian to receive this honour. Earlier, former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had received this award in 1983.
IOC President Thomas Bach has written a letter to Abhinav Bindra informing him about the Olympic Order award to be given to India's legendary shooter Abhinav Bindra. It is written in the letter that 'The IOC Executive Board has decided that you should be honoured with the Olympic Order for your commendable service to the Olympic moment.' Bach has also invited Abhinav for the award ceremony. India's Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya has expressed happiness over the award being given to Bindra.
Let us tell you that the Olympic Order is the highest award given by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for outstanding contribution to the Olympic movement. Established in 1975, this award replaced the Olympic Diploma of Merit and is awarded to those individuals who have demonstrated exceptional merit in the field of sports or have rendered significant services to the Olympic movement. The IOC also gives this award to the head of state of the country hosting the Olympics. Under this, this award was given to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the award ceremony held in Mumbai in the year 1983.
