Paris, July 23 (Tezzbuzz). Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar will not participate in the Paris Olympics. The Slovenian rider has decided to withdraw from the Olympics due to fatigue.
Slovenian agency STA confirmed the news on Monday, a day after Pogacar won his third Tour with a lead of more than six minutes over second-placed Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark.
Pogacar won six stages and dominated the race, his victory made even more impressive after he won the Giro de Italia in May.
The manner of Pogacar's victory and the form shown in the early-season one-day race, which is similar to the 273-km Olympic road cycling race, meant the 2020 Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist was the favourite for Olympic gold in his already stellar season.
However, his agent Alex Carrera revealed that the fatigue the 25-year-old has accumulated over the past three months has forced him to take the decision to withdraw from the Paris Games.
With both Pogacar and Vingegaard not competing in Paris, the Belgian duo of Tour de France third-placed Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert will be the new favourites in Paris, with both Evenepoel challenging for gold in the road race and the 32-kilometre time-trial.
