INS Brahmaputra is currently heeled over following a significant fire onboard, the Navy confirmed in a statement on Monday. One sailor is reported missing since the incident, it noted. The fire broke out on July 21 and was brought under control by the ship’s crew with assistance from Mumbai’s naval dockyard firefighters. Despite efforts, the ship remains listed to its port side.
The Navy stated, “A fire broke out onboard INS Brahmaputra, a multi-role frigate, during a refit on the evening of July 21, 2024. The fire was extinguished by the ship’s crew with support from firefighters at Naval Dockyard, Mumbai, and other ships in the harbor by the morning of July 22, 2024. Subsequent actions, including sanitization checks to assess residual fire risk, were conducted.”
“In the fire incident aboard the frigate INS Brahmaputra, the warship sustained significant listing to its port side. Despite exhaustive efforts, the vessel could not be stabilized upright. Currently, it remains inclined alongside its berth, resting on one side,” the statement elaborated.
“All personnel have been safely located except one junior sailor, who is currently being searched for. The Indian Navy has initiated an inquiry to investigate the incident,” the statement added.
