Gandhinagar: Increase in the number of confirmed cases of Chandipura virus in Gujarat. 7 more people have been confirmed infected. With this, the total number of confirmed cases in the state has risen to 58. The Gujarat government has reported 20 deaths due to the virus so far.
One each in Sabarkanta, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Morbi and Vadodara districts and two in Mehsana were confirmed yesterday. The Chandipura virus was confirmed in Gujarat on July 1. The samples of the deceased are being sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.
The virus, which mainly affects children, has also been linked to severe encephalitis in India. It is concluded that the virus spreads to humans through the bite of sand flies, which carry the virus. The disease mainly affects children between the ages of 9 months and 14 years. This RNA virus, known as Chandipura vesiculovirus (CHPV), belongs to the Rhabdoviridae family of rabies viruses.
