International Court (Photo- AFP)
Israel has received a major setback from the International Court. The court has declared Israel's occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem illegal. In its decision, the court has also advised Israel to vacate the land and pay compensation. The United Nations General Assembly had appealed to the International Court to hear the case in 2022. Although this decision of the International Court is not binding, it will put pressure on it.
The court said in its decision that acts such as occupying the area, imposing permanent control and building settlements make Israel's presence illegal. Israel's continued presence in the area was illegal and should be ended as soon as possible. The international court said that Israel's policy in the West Bank and East Jerusalem violates international law. The court also found that Israel's use of natural resources as an occupying power was inconsistent with its obligations under international law.
Netanyahu said- Jerusalem belongs to the Israeli people
Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu's reaction to the court's decision has also come out. He said that Israel is on its land. This historical fact cannot be denied that this land including Jerusalem belongs to the Israeli people. Israel said that unfortunately, the court's opinion is fundamentally wrong. It mixes politics and law. It shows the politics of the corridors of the United Nations in New York in the courtroom of the ICJ in The Hague.
Israel has said that the court's decision is completely out of touch with the reality of the Middle East. It also ignores Israel's security imperative to protect its territory and its citizens. It must be emphasized that the decision is completely one-sided. It ignores the past.
Thebin-Gvir went to Jerusalem on Thursday
The court's decision came at a time when Israel's far-right national security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir visited Jerusalem's most sensitive religious site a day earlier, on Thursday. During this, he had warned of disrupting the Gaza ceasefire talks. Earlier, some countries had decided to recognize Palestine as a nation, against which Ben-Gvir had visited Al-Aqsa in May as a protest.
