Dhaka. Students' protest against irregularities in reservation in government jobs in Bangladesh has turned violent. So far 39 people have died in the violence. Thousands of students armed with sticks and stones clashed with armed police forces in Dhaka. During this, more than 2500 people were also injured.
Mobile internet services have been shut down in many places to suppress the protests. Police also fired tear gas shells at students who blocked a highway in Chittagong. The escalating violence forced authorities to shut down railway services to and from Dhaka as well as metro rail services from Thursday afternoon.
What are the demands of the protesters?
The biggest question is what are the students' demands from the government and what is the law of reservation for government jobs in Bangladesh. In fact, 56 percent of government jobs are reserved under the reservation system in Bangladesh.
Out of these, 30 percent reservation is reserved for the descendants of freedom fighters of the 1971 Liberation War. At the same time, 10 percent reservation is reserved for backward administrative districts and 10 percent reservation is reserved for women. Apart from this, five percent reservation is reserved for ethnic minority groups and one percent for disabled people.
What is the controversy regarding reservation?
Of all these reservation systems, the controversy is about the 30 percent reservation that is being given to the descendants of freedom fighters. According to media reports, students say that the government is in favor of giving reservation to those who support Sheikh Hasina's government. Students allege that government jobs are not being given on the basis of merit.
