This promotion is similar to the promotion of his father MK Stalin, who became the Deputy Chief Minister after the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

He can take oath as Deputy Chief Minister on August 22
A senior DMK minister told the Indian Express that Udhayanidhi's promotion is certain and he may become deputy CM before CM Stalin's scheduled visit to the USA on August 22.
The main reason behind making Udhayanidhi Stalin the Deputy Chief Minister is said to be to reduce the burden on the Chief Minister. The DMK government said, "This step will help Udhayanidhi to fulfill important responsibility."
'The post was demanded'
