Why is it called garland?

If you also have this question in your mind that why it is called Varmala and not Vaadhumala, then let us tell you the big reason behind it. Actually, wearing the garland is related to the girl’s acceptance of the boy. This ritual has been going on since the Ramayana period. The way Mother Sita accepted Lord Ram as her groom and garlanded him.

Since then this ritual started in Hindu religion. In earlier times, the first thing girls used to do after choosing their groom was to garland him, hence this ritual came to be known as Varmala. At many places it is also known as Jayamala.

Why is garland worn?

Let us tell you that wearing a garland directly means accepting the person in front of you. In old times, when both the boy and the girl garlanded each other, it was considered as their approval. It means that the bride and groom have liked each other. In ancient times, this ritual was also performed in Gandharva marriages.

There is a ritual of garlanding in Swayamvar too.

You must have often heard about the Swayamvar happening in old times. There is no direct marriage of boy and girl in Swayamvar. Rather, as soon as the girl or boy liked each other, they used to wear garlands to show their acceptance without saying anything. There is also mention of Swayamvar and Varmala of Shiva and Parvati in Shiv Purana.
