New Delhi
Bangladesh Cricket Board i.e. BCB made a big announcement on Saturday 18 November. BCB announced the new Test captain of the team, as the current captain is injured and the vice-captain is on leave. In such a situation, batsman Nazmul Hussain Shanto has been appointed captain for the two-match Test series against New Zealand starting at the end of this month. Nazmul has been handed the charge after regular captain Shakib Al Hasan was injured during the World Cup in India and vice-captain Liton Das requested leave to be with his newborn daughter.
Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Cricket Operations Chief Jalal Yunus told reporters in Dhaka, "Liton has asked for a month’s leave. He will not play two tests. He wants to spend these holidays especially with his family. Nazmul Hussain is the captain for the next two test matches." Ahead of the World Cup, Nazmul was made the vice-captain of the ODI team and led the team in two matches in the tournament in Shakib’s absence. He also led Bangladesh in the third ODI against New Zealand in September in the absence of Shakib Al and Liton Das.
New Zealand defeated Bangladesh 2-0 in the ODI series. This was the team’s first series win in Bangladesh in 15 years. New Zealand’s Test team will arrive in Bangladesh on Monday and the first Test will be played in Sylhet from November 28 to December 2, while the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka will host the second Test from December 6-10. New Zealand’s team was in fourth place in the World Cup 2023, which got a chance to play the semi-finals, but lost against India. At the same time, Bangladesh team was ranked 8th in the points table of 10 teams and was successful in getting the ticket for the Champions Trophy.
