Congress On Israel Hamas War: Congress issued a new statement on Friday (November 17) on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. Congress condemned Israel’s action, terming it genocide.
In a statement issued by Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, it was said, “Israel’s action after Hamas’s condemnable attack on its citizens is genocidal. Targeting civilians, women and children, hospitals and shelters violates the values of humanity and every international norm of war.”
‘Now hospitals are being targeted’
After weeks of blocking fuel, electricity, medicines, anesthetics and humanitarian aid, hospitals are now being targeted militarily, even as premature babies are being denied medical attention, the statement said. This is a horrific and unprecedented development even in times of war.”
‘Statements of genocidal intent are being given’
Jairam Ramesh said in the statement, “More than 10,000 people have been killed, more than half of whom are our children. WHO recorded that a child is being killed every 10 minutes in Gaza. All this is happening when statements of genocidal intentions are being given by the top Israeli leadership. Prime Minister Netanyahu himself has called for parts of Gaza to be reduced to rubble and has called the wanton killing of men, women and children collateral damage.”
‘Double standards being implemented in Ukraine and Gaza’
The Congress leader said in the statement, “The kind of inhuman language used on Palestinians by some Israeli ministers is like the language used before the Holocaust.”
It is shocking that many influential countries, which choose to speak the language of human rights and justice when convenient, are supporting Israel’s actions, the statement said. The double standard being applied in Ukraine and Gaza is clear.”
‘Ceasefire should be declared immediately’
The statement said, “The need of the hour is to reduce tension and declare ceasefire immediately.” The world cannot watch silently as a second Nakba unfolds and the ethnic cleansing and eviction of Palestinians, as was done in 1948, is once again being carried out with impunity.”
The statement said, “The Indian National Congress urges the Government of India to make every possible effort to put pressure on the governments of the US, Israel and the European Union to stop Israel’s violence in Gaza.” The statement concluded by saying, “How many more lives will have to be taken before our collective conscience is awakened?”
Congress has already issued a statement
Let us tell you that before Friday’s statement, Congress had issued at least two statements on the Israel-Hamas issue. In its first statement, Congress had condemned the attack on Israel and said that violence never provides any solution.”text-align: justify;”>After the Congress Working Committee meeting, the party issued another statement in which it underlined its support for the Palestinian people’s right to land, self-governance and to live with dignity.
