Chhath Puja 2023: The four-day ritual of Chhath, the great festival of folk faith, started with Nahay-Khay. On this occasion, Chhathvratis consumed food consisting of pumpkin vegetable and gram dal along with rice. Chhathavrati accepts Kharna Prasad (bread, jaggery kheer). Then other members of the family accept this Prasad. After this, a long waterless fast of 36 hours begins.
Considering the purity and sanctity of Chhath fast, washing and drying wheat has great importance. In this, women always take care of the purity of the place where wheat is dried. On the day of Nahay Khay, Chhathvartis clean and dry the wheat and on the day of Kharna the wheat is ground in the mill. After grinding it, Kharna Roti is made and Mahaprasad Thekua is made the next day. Rice is also ground along with wheat. Rice is also washed thoroughly and ground in a mill and after this, kasar and laddu are made from this flour. Kasar laddu is also offered as Prasad during Chhath festival.

Kheer made of jaggery is prepared for worship on the evening of Kharna. This kheer is also called Rasiya in some places. This prasad is made by lighting fire with mango wood on a new earthen stove.

However, in case of non-availability of earthen stove in urban areas, some people make it on new gas stove also. But special care is taken to ensure that the stove is new and not impure.

Kharna is the second day of Chhath Puja. The sunrise of this day will be at 06.46 am and sunset at 05.26 pm.
