New Delhi. The Central Government has so far procured 520.6 lakh tonnes of rice in the current Kharif Marketing Season 2022-23. A total of Rs 1.6 lakh crore (Rs 1.6 lakh crore) has been paid to 1.12 crore farmers for this purchase done at Minimum Support Price (MSP).
In a statement issued on Friday, the Food Ministry said that a total of 5206 million tonnes of rice has been procured till May 22 in the current Kharif marketing season. According to the ministry, 1.12 crore farmers have benefited from the rice procurement campaign. They have been paid around Rs 1.6 lakh crore as Minimum Support Price (MSP).
The Center has set a target of procuring 626 lakh tonnes of rice in the current marketing season 2022-23 (October-September). The Food Corporation of India (FCI) along with state agencies procures paddy under the Minimum Price Support Scheme. FCI had procured 575.8 lakh tonnes of rice during the marketing season 2021-22.
According to the Agriculture Ministry’s third advance estimate, rice production is expected to be 135.5 million tonnes in 2022-23 crop year, as against 129.5 million tonnes in the previous crop year. Significantly, the government has fixed the MSP of ‘common’ category paddy at Rs 2,040 per quintal and ‘A’ grade paddy at Rs 2,060 per quintal for the current crop year.
