Do you know how much was the world’s first password made? In 1961, MIT computer science professor Fernando Corbato created the first digital password as Project Problem-Solver. Actually he created an operating system of computer, on which everyone wanted to work.
Then everyone needed time to themselves at the computer. So he came up with a way of time-sharing among all. To solve this problem, Roberto equipped the computer with a password. Created a different password for each person working on it. So that everyone can work on it on their own time. So this is how the world’s first password was created. Then this step became so popular that it became revolutionary in the coming times. Electronic devices could not be imagined without it. However, later, before his death, Coberto was very sorry about the password. He passed away on 12 July 2019. He invented the first computer password in 1960.
He admitted that the password has started being misused through hacking. We need to move beyond passwords to maintain privacy in the digital age. Passwords were once one of our most trusted security measures, but when the hacking started, it became clear that even passwords weren’t that secure. Fernando José “Corby” Corbato was an American computer scientist who made his name in the development of time-sharing operating systems. He also served in the Navy. Corbato left the Navy in 1946. Then enrolled in the California Institute of Technology. He graduated in Physics in 1950. In 1956, he received his PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It was here that he became a professor in 1965 and continued to work there till his retirement.
Corbato is credited with the first use of passwords for secure access to files on a large computer system, although he later claimed that this primary security method was out of date and difficult to handle. Corbato is also known as the “Corbato rule” for passwords. Corbato married programmer Isabel Blandford in 1962; He died in 1973. Corbato later developed diabetes, and complications from the disease led to his death at the age of 93.
